How can a word spelled “colonel” be pronounced “kər-nəl”?

A local morning television show interviews a travel agent about vacation packages to exotic destinations. They urge people to get to a particular destination in Hawaii.
Why?
Apparently, the fireworks show is not to be missed.
Really?
With all the natural beauty of that tropical island state, you need to smoke the place up with the man-made glitz of fireworks to motivate people to go there?

This whole past weekend I was thinking of calling you. Seems silly to comment instead. Coming weekend though...
Hey Olga. Good to hear from you. It is time we got caught up. I'll email you.
I am with you. In Spanish Colonel is Coronel, so the "r" is there. First time ever I saw it written in English, I said Colonel, and correction followed: It's “kər-nəl”... How do I know. Answer: you don't

I have ask my wife many times for the answer the question #1.
